Starting a wellness brand can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a path filled with unexpected twists and turns. As someone who has been on this journey for nearly 5 years with Shakti Creative, a small design studio for uplifting wellness brands, I want to share some insights that I wish I had known earlier and some journal prompts to get you started. These lessons go beyond pursuing your passion and making money; they’re about going to the depths of self-discovery and daily courage. These are lessons I’ve learned from first-hand experience in running my own business and also witnessing in clients I’ve worked with over the years.
1. Confronting Your Relationship with Money
Starting a business means confronting your relationship with money head-on. You’ll need to manage finances, budget wisely, and make tough decisions. It’s an opportunity for growth in understanding and managing your resources. Feeling like taking the leap to get up and running is going to cost you everything? A word of advice: Starting small doesn’t equate to thinking small.
2. Working on Yourself
Business ownership is a personal journey too. Take the time to work on yourself. I’ve learned that as we evolve, our businesses evolve too and it’s so incredibly important to maintain your relationship with yourself first. I like to think that owning a business is like being in another relationship. Before it, you’re comfortable, confident, and have a deep sense of self. Then you find someone and those sneaky patterns you’d left behind in a past relationship start to creep up on you. Like relationships, in your business you’ll be confronted with old patterns surfacing and it’s so important to maintain a practice for staying grounded within yourself and have the capacity to identify and rewrite old patterns that might hold you back from reaching your full potential. When you’re committed to yourself, you can better commit in your relationships.
3. Navigating Self-Worth and Boundaries
Your self-worth, trust, and respect play crucial roles in your business. Learn to set and honor boundaries around time and the people and clients you say “yes” to. I’ll give you some writing prompts below to start identifying your non-negotiables in business and in life so you can get started with confidence and a better understanding of how you want to show up for your audience and loved ones.
4. Embracing Quiet Seasons
Accept quiet seasons as opportunities for reflection and growth. They can be just as valuable as the busiest times in your business journey. During slow seasons, I love taking time to reflect on the last year, write about what’s been working, what’s not working, and what can be improved upon. This slow season, I’m actually rebranding my entire business and building a new website – and this blog is just the start of it! This is also valuable and welcomed time to slow down, get outside, and spend time with friends and family and turn inward.
5. Seeking Support
Don’t hesitate to lean on others for fresh perspectives and support. Building a network of fellow entrepreneurs and mentors can provide invaluable guidance. Ask around for small business networking groups in your area, join Facebook groups of like-minded entrepreneurs. Reach out to founders and friends you look up to and grab a cup of coffee to pick their brains. If you’re not sure where to start, think about where your dream clients might be hanging out. The number one thing you can do for building your network is find your community, whether it’s digital or IRL and nurture deep relationships built on support, inspiration, and the sharing of knowledge.
6. Committing to Your Goals
Maintain a clear and unwavering commitment to both your tangible and intangible goals. I’ve seen so many entrepreneurs take the leap and make the investment into building a strategic brand, only to loosen their grasp on their launch date and never begin. If launching your business is a goal for 2024, set a date and stick to it. Dive deep, and work on your priorities consistently to reach your launch date. Just remember you don’t have to be perfect to start. You just need to start.
7. Believing in Your Gift
Above all, deeply believe in the gift you have to bring to the world. Ask yourself the following questions and honor your unique experiences and perspective. Have you just reached a transformative moment or period of time in your life that has inspired you to start your business? What conversations have you had recently that stay stuck in your mind and think others can benefit from? Sharing your gift and perspective with the world is more valuable than the services you provide.
Journal Prompts
Ready to dive a little deeper? I invite you to take about 30 minutes to grab a journal, a cup of tea, and reflect on these journal prompts for awareness around approaching your business. Take out your journal and ponder these questions:
- How do I perceive my relationship with money, and how can I improve it?
- What old patterns might be holding me back from starting, and how can I rewrite them?
- What boundaries do I need to set to protect my self-worth and well-being?
- How can I embrace and make the most of quiet seasons in my business?
- Who can I turn to for support and fresh perspectives?
- What are my big goals for my business and my life?
- How can I fully embrace and believe in the unique gift I have to offer?
A Helpful Resource for Exploring Your Brand Purpose:
Passion, Purpose, Profit
If I could gift this to all aspiring entrepreneurs, this would be the book. I bought this book back in 2018 and is one that travels with me everywhere. It’s all about mapping out your purpose and bringing it into all aspects of your business and gives you a roadmap to get there and thrive. I base a lot of my work in brand strategy off of the work I’ve done here and it’s an incredibly powerful tool that aspiring or existing entrepreneurs can benefit from.
Remember, this journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate every step, and know that you are not alone. I’m here to support, guide, and celebrate you at every stage of your wellness brand journey through brand strategy, branding and website design.
